Running FWH/xharbour app on Apples

Post by Colin Wisbey »

What's involved for my client to run my FWH/xHarbour app (I'm using DBFCDX RDD) in a network on Apple MACs?

Are there any "gotcha"'s? (eg Will DLL's used by my FWH app work fine?)

How good is the performance (speed) compared to normal PC/Windows environment?

What facilities would my client need to have?

Anyone had much experience in this environment?

(I dont intend to use an Apple myself - my client only has MAC's and I just need my app to run "out of the box" on their network of MAC's).

I need some info quickly so would greatly appreciate any advice, especially from anyone who has been through this exercise, successfully or unsuccessfully)

Thanks.

Hi Colin

Your clients would need to have Macs with intel chips , I run a MacBook Pro with
Parallels ( virtual machine - vista) - you can hotkey between the Mac OS and Windows OS.
Also with the latest Parallels I think you can run windows apps from the Mac Desktop.

You can also get a virtual machine from VM Ware.

Colin,

You can also use "CrossOver":
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/

it is based on "Wine":
http://www.winehq.org/
http://www.winehq.org/myths
"Wine Is Not an Emulator: Wine does not emulate the Intel x86 processor. It will thus not be as slow as Wabi which, since it is not running on a x86 Intel processor, also has to emulate the processor. Windows applications that do not make system calls will run just as fast as on Windows (no more no less)."

It runs quite fast and it is integrated into Mac. It is not a virtual machine running on top of Mac OSX.

We have used it and it works very well. Though we have not tested it with Mac networks.

Thanks Antonio and Colin.

Will DLL's (eg FreeImage, RMChart) and OCX's used by my FWH app work as expected?

Anyone had any experience running their FWH / xHb app on a network of Apple MACs?

Colin,

CrossOver (Wine) provides a very high level of compatibility with Windows, but you will not know it for sure until you try it.

If you want to, we can try your app here for you on a Mac.
