I sincerely admire your faith in Windows 8...

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Hello Antonio,
I am that sure because people look at the tablet and notebook market. But The battle for market shares takes place on the desktop side.
WINDOWS 8 gets install on nearly every desktop machine. Windows is the most used desktop OS and from now on you only can buy WINDOWS 8 or server 2012. So in some years many of the PCs are new or substituted. This way people get used to WINDOWS 8 / Metro style and asks themselves why to take a learning curve only to use a tablet or a handy.
Best regards,
Otto

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Sorry but Windows 8 is not the most used operating system.
As of November the market share was:
Windows 8 - 8%
Windows 7 - 69.3%
Windows XP- 18.8%
The numbers for Windows 8 are rising but it is a long way from being the dominate version of Windows.

I think that Steve Ballmer will have to leave from Microsoft CEO very soon...
Many big companies are very nervous about this situation, surely company shares holders too...

Gale,
I didn't say that WINDOWS 8 is the most used OS. I said WINDOWS.
>Windows is the most used desktop OS and from now on you only can buy WINDOWS 8 or server 2012.
I have a maps abo and the links to download WIN 7 or WINDOS 2008 are broken.
You have to download: WINDOWS 8 or WINDOWS 2012 same with Office.
Best regards,
Otto

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Hello Gale,
This is the scenario like I see it:
2012
Market Share of Windows 7 45.11%
Market Share of Windows XP 39.08%
Market Share of Windows Vista 5.67%
Market Share of Windows 8 1.72%
2013
2014
2015
2016
WINDOWS 8 45.11% + 39.08%
Market Share of Windows 7 5.67%
Now these users have to decide for a tablet, handy or notebook.
Question they will ask themselves:
Learning or should we take what I know?
Best regards,
Otto

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Otto,
A grand mother or father, and kids, and ourselves can use a tablet with almost no learning at all...
Haven't you seen many kids around using iPads or Android tablets ? I have seen them, and they need no training at all...
The iPad started this revolution that many are following. No need for Windows tablets... (thats why they are not selling, meanwhile iPads are hot cakes)

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
By that time surely those users have used an iPad and probably they already own one...2016
WINDOWS 8 45.11% + 39.08%
Market Share of Windows 7 5.67%
Now these users have to decide for a tablet, handy or notebook.

A tablet is just a large phone. For iPhone or Android phones users, there is no learning at all as they already know how to use them. They are exactly the same thing, just a larger display.

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Dear Otto,
We are all used to this one
We already know it. Just think why you use Harbour... you are used to it and its difficult to change to a different one. Right ?
What already works will not be easily replaced, unless it is much easier, and even on those cases, many people simply want to keep using the known tool

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Only time will tell ... however:
Microsoft says that Win 8 sales are even, month to month, with Win 7 sales during the same time period ( volume by month after release ).
Most people simply don't need new computers, so they are not buying them. Its not attitude, its the economy, at least in the US.
Tablets are popular, but most are limited. Everyone I know who bought an RT tablet is very happy with it, and new apps are coming out every day, and most are very good quality.
Dell just announced a new tablet with Win 8 PRO ... so it runs all legacy apps ( including our FW apps ) with a SSD ... for $ 449. You can't get an ipad for that !
Microsoft stated in the beginning they expected adoption of the new system to take 3 years. People are shouting the death knoll at 3 months !
For the industry I serve, there are only Windows apps. There is zero penetration ( not one ) Android app, nor are there any Apple apps. There were some for the iMac, but they are gone ... only Windows !
I think I'm too old for all of this. In my old age I guess I'm too tame, and I simply like Windows 8, and I love the support Microsoft is shoveling out for FREE ... everywhere ! Sorry if my acceptance offends ...

Re: Porting from Fwh to Mac
Tim,
Apple iPad mini starts at 329 US$:

Among those reasons is the competitive threat of Apple's iPad, which now has a starting price of $329 with the entry-level iPad mini. Wu said Windows 8 hardware priced between $500 and $1,200 is "uncompetitive" compared to lower-priced options from Apple and even Google's Android.
